OEM vs Aftermarket vs Used Car Parts: Which Should You Buy?

Every car owner in South Africa eventually faces the same question at the parts counter: do I pay top dollar for genuine, take a chance on aftermarket, or hunt down a clean used part? The right answer depends entirely on the part, the car, and how long you plan to keep it.
Buy OEM for things that fail expensively. Buy aftermarket for wear items. Buy used for body, trim and electronics.
What each term actually means
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts are made by — or to the spec of — the original supplier to the car maker. They come in the manufacturer's box, with their warranty, at full retail. A genuine BMW oil filter and a Mahle oil filter sold via BMW are both OEM.
Aftermarket parts are made by third-party manufacturers to fit a range of cars. Quality varies wildly: top-tier brands (Bosch, Sachs, Brembo, KYB) often supply the same factories that make OEM parts. Bottom-tier no-name parts are best avoided on anything safety-critical.
Used parts are removed from another vehicle — typically a written-off donor — and resold. Quality depends on the donor's mileage, the part's wear characteristics, and the seller's honesty.

When to pick which
Pick OEM for timing belts, head gaskets, ABS modules, airbags, brake master cylinders — anything where failure is dangerous or repair is expensive. The premium is cheap insurance.
Pick quality aftermarket for shocks, brake pads, filters, spark plugs, sensors and most service items. Bosch, NGK, Brembo, Sachs, KYB and Hella will out-last cheap OEM-stamped equivalents at half the price.
Pick used OEM for body panels (doors, fenders, bonnets), bumpers, light assemblies, interior trim, infotainment heads, switchgear, mirrors, wheels and rare electronic modules. These items don't really "wear" the way mechanical parts do, and the savings are massive.
